"Gentlease has 1/5 the lactose of milk-based formula" 2009-11-24
By Citizen John (Washington, DC)
A good way to start shopping for this product is to call Enfamil to see their current pricing, keeping in mind any differences in can size and number of cans in a case. Since this is just one can, it's easy to compare. I have purchased this product through Enfamil, Amazon and a few other places, always taking advantage of the best deals.

Next... The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until six months of age. But here in the U.S. after your 3 months maternity leave, are you able to pump enough and store in a refrigerator at work? And you might need formula anyway as we do. I mention this because some imply their formula is as good as human breast milk.

We're blessed with twins. They started out colicky and we found that Nutramigen worked at that time. They got through that phase and we've been using Gentlease and solids. After they're a year old it will be all solids. Our pediatrician recommended Gentlease. It has 1/5 the lactose of milk-based formula.

I really researched formulas. There are even organizations promoting the sale of human breast milk and there are organizations wanting to stop the sale of human breast milk for fear of health hazards that the FDA cannot control. No matter, those offering breast milk do so at prohibitively high prices - nothing charitable about it.

All the brands that I've seen have DHA and ARA, nutrients found in breast milk that promote brain and eye development, iron which is necessary for growth and many more ingredients. The government requires them to have certain ingredients. The major brands do not seem highly differentiated to me except for their specialy models. Gentlease is one of those.

Gentlease is one of the special formulas because it has a much lower amount of lactose as well as broken down proteins to make it easier to digest.

The prices vary and so do the size of the cans and the number of cans in a case in the event that you want to get it in bulk. Unfortunately, I haven't seen Gentlease in big cans at the big box stores. One can also check at the local pharmacy or grocery store for comparison purposes. Keep an eye out for coupons too. You've got to keep constant watch for the best price, and there have been times when the Amazon price prevails.

 "Helped baby feel better" 2009-01-16
By M04A15 (CO)
My baby was exclusively nursed for the first 4 weeks of her life, but due to complications, I had to start supplementing with formula. We started with Enfamil Lipil, but she immediately started having problems with gas and was obviously very miserable (and so were we!). We switched to the Gentlease and her problems with gas improved significantly within a few days. She's now 11 weeks & consumes this for about 90% of her feedings for almost a month now, and she's a much happier baby. With the help of this formula, she's back on target with her growth. I noticed that the price on Amazon is EXTREMELY expensive. You can buy a 24oz can at WalMart for $24.99.

 "Corn Syrup solids!!" 2008-07-18
By A. Hindes
Parents beware - the first ingredient in this type of Enfamil is corn syrup solids! Our son had issues with gas, so our pediatrician recommended this formula. Three days after starting it, I read the ingredients and decided that since formula is the only thing a young baby is ingesting, corn syrup is not what we wanted for his main food source. We switched to regular Enfamil Lipil and he's been doing well on that.

 "1st ingredient: Corn Syrup!" 2007-11-14
By MamaWife (Tucson, Az)
I thought that this would be the best choice for our son when we switched from Nestle Good Start with Natural Cultures. After I purchased it, I read the ingredients, and the 1st one is CORN SYRUP SOLIDS!

WE are not going to buy this again, we are very upset. We would be irresponsible parents if we fed our child corn syrup when he starts solids. So why would this be the first ingredient in the only food our baby is getting right now.

We will either try regular Enfamil Lipil, and maybe switch back to good start.

"2 month old agrees with it" 2007-10-20
By Matthew Klee (Mountain View, CA)
We used this with our child from very early on after other products seemed to cause him to fuss. At first we tried a Costco version, then a couple other Enfamils, but ended up with this one, which breaks down some of the lactose in advance. Our child seemed to fuss the least using it. (He does has a mild form of acid reflux, and so has a medication twice a day for that.) With the combination of the two, he's been eating more and with less pained/gassy feedings. I notice when we make bottles there are far fewer bubbles as well.

If you're experimenting, you may wanna see if your doctor has a sample available. (That's how we first tried it.) Or just get the smaller size (12 oz) and see how it works. I can't remember how long it took to notice a difference in his feedings. Perhaps someone else can report on that.

There is clumping, but I've noticed that with every kind of powder formula we've tried. We just heat up the water and make a few bottles in advance, and the warmer water seems to break it up more easily. (Pop 'em in the fridge and microwave it when you need it. Mix it around after to get out any hot spots.)

Good luck!
