 "Worth the effort" 2009-03-18
By Steph (California)
My son has very bad reflux and this formula helps. We actually have to add a little rice to it. (even though this has rice starch in it) He can hold this mixture down better than he can any other formula (or breast milk)

Anyway. I agree that this formula is a CHORE to mix up. Before you cry foul and claim that it's not worth the effort, keep in mind that our child was throwing up so much that he gained ZERO weight for the month of Feb.

We had to cut down breast milk and supplement with Enfamil AR. With that said, here is how we make the clump free mixture:

1. Microwave water in coffee cup for 15-30 seconds. (warm, not hot)

2. Pour water in shaker, add formula and a little rice.

3. Shake this stuff as hard as you can for about 30 seconds.

4. Pour in Bottle.

I've done this for the last few weeks and I have no clumps what so ever. If you shake this up in the bottle, then YES you will have a nightmare of clumps to deal with. (we even use Dr. Brown AND Born Free bottles)

The problem is that the formula starts to bond as soon as it touches water. So you have to shake hard and fast to beat the clumping. If you shake it slowly, then the clumps start up and are VERY difficult to get out.

When traveling, I have two shakers with me. (just in case I'm out longer than planned) Again.... shaking Enfamil AR in a bottle can lead to great frustration. My son has gained 4 oz in two weeks (getting weight checked again this week... crossing fingers), so I must recommend this product despite the difficulty in preparing.

I again freely admit that mixing this formula is difficult. It is very prone to clumping. It can be slimy like another reviewer has said. If you have clumps stuck in your nipple, then your baby can become frustrated. It is an absolute hassle to mix in public. However, if you have a baby that is not gaining weight or holding down their food... and you have had this formula recommended by a dr. (4 recommended this to us), then it may be a viable option for you.

I will gladly help anyone who has questions for me about this. (i'm not sure how/if Amazon will notify me, but i would love to help)

 "dreadfully thick" 2009-02-11
By Starbuck
This is a terrible product for a company as well known as Enfamil to put out, it is literally not able to be mixed, I have even used my Braun handheld mixer, I feel like I am torturing the baby trying to suck this thick slime out of the bottle, I bought a case of six and what a waste, not even one can will ever be finished!! Stay away from this formula! Frustrating!!!!!!!!!!

"Okay, still have problems. " 2009-02-05
By Lori Yost (hollister florida)
I bought this because my daughter was put on natural cultures by good start but it made her spit up ALL THE TIME. So I bought a regular can of enfamil and she did okay with it, but still spit up. so I bought this one and she acts like she doesn't like it as much as the good start. I had to mix it with regular. And as for the thickness, its just like a cereal bottle. It makes it easier to make than having to put cereal in it. I'm still trying to figure out which nipple is best for it. I've tried making holes bigger, but that ends up a disaster. I bought some medium flow nipples today. Will try them tonight. Hopefully that helps solve this.

 "bottle clogger!" 2008-12-13
By BassoonMomma (Southern Arizona)
I hate this formula because it is always lumpy, no matter how much I shake and shake and shake and shake....... My baby still spits up a little, but that is to be expected. The thick formula is a real pain to deal with. So unless your baby has a REAL problem of spitting up, it isn't worth the hassle. I think my baby spits up less with the regular Enfamil product than she does with a generic brand of formula that I tried. So I still prefer Enfamil brand.

 "No more spit up!" 2008-02-12

This formula works great! It is a bit cheaper here on Amazon than at my local Wal-mart. It has reduced my daughters spit up greatly! You will need a square or slit type nipple as this formula is a bit thicker than others. Best to use warm water to mix also.
