"Be Forewarned - high in glutamic acid!" 2009-09-07
By Edward Tsai (New York, NY United States)
Our son had feeding issues with regular formula, so we switched to Nutramigen, which he seemed to take much better. So we were satisfied at the time. However, later on, our son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (on the autism spectrum). If you look up Dr. Russell Blaylock's work (he's a neurosurgeon and nutrionist), he lays out the risks of excess glutamates (what he calls excitotoxins) that would have a neurotoxic effect on a developing child's brain (I recommend the video at the bottom of this link: [...]). We just found out that Nutramigen has an extremely high level of glutamatic acid compared to other infant formulas (see [...], cross linked from the prior website referenced). There is absolutely no conscionable reason for any infant formula to have such high level of glutamic acid. Do your own research and be forewarned. We were not.

"Expensive But It Worked Within One Day" 2009-07-09
By Citizen John (Washington, DC)
I purchased this product from a number of places and it's good to begin comparison pricing is by calling Enfamil directly. They don't sell this in the big box stores or in large cans anywhere.

If your newborn cries inconsolably, you might try Nutramigen or another product for which I provided a link below. Nutramigen completely takes care of colic quickly. It's expensive compared to other formulas, but I noticed that the price has come down recently. Because of the really high price, you have to shop around for the best deal and I found that Enfamil will send coupons. (Hint: Call them and be persistent in asking to be connected to their nutritionist to discuss the product itself. Get to their nutritionist and you're likely to be sent coupons and sometimes a free sample in this very size can.)

From Wikipedia: "Baby colic (also known as infant colic, three-month colic, infantile colic and colic) is a condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries or screams frequently and for extended periods without any discernible reason." You'll know it if it happens to your baby, and it's awful to not be able to do anything to immediately relieve your baby.

It contains DHA, ARA and iron, but all baby formulas do because it is required by law. Thus, these ingredients do not differentiate a baby formula product.

We used Nutramigen during their first 6 months because our twin babies could not handle lactose. Because of the cost, we'd always compare prices and stock up when and wherever we could get it cheaper. All in all, we got this product through several sources by making price our priority, but of course that takes time too.

The reason Nutramigen is expensive is because it goes through a very specialized and difficult manufacturing process. They extensively break down the proteins, not just partially, into very tiny bits of amino acid. This then more easily passes through the baby's gut. That's why it is able to take care of colic completely and quickly.

You might not use it for 6 months as we did. The memory of the colic experience with our twins made us extra cautious. It sure is more expensive and it comes in smaller cans.

Alternatively, you might try this competing brand based on pricing available at the time of your search: Similac Sensitive Advance Infant Formula With Iron, Powder, Case of 6 Cans- each 12.9 Ounces

"INSURANCE WILL PAY for hypoallergenic formula!!" 2009-05-28
By Newinocean (USA)
Hypoallergenic formula was necessary for our daughter's acid reflux.

We found out from a friend that most insurance companies will completely cover the cost of hypoallergenic formula, either by reimbursing you what you've spent on it, or if you get it as a prescription through your pediatrician. Ours did!

Many doctors don't know this, so they don't know to give a prescription for the formula. Call your insurance company today!

We used this formula for the first two months, then gentlease and now trying something else. Nutramigen help my baby sleep through the night. It is easy to digest and help him go more frequently. Our baby had a lot of gas with other formulas.

In a few words, this milk was the only one mi little baby was able to drink without undesirable side effects.
